Renaissance Dam to be built by Ethiopia on the Abay (Nile0 River will soon start generating test power. Dr. Sileshi Bekele, Adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office on the dam and cross-border issues, announced that the dam would generate power in a few weeks.
The dam is expected to generate 700 megawatts of electricity for the first time. According to Ministry of Water and Power officials, the dam will initially cover 20 percent of the national demand. Ethiopia completed the second flooding of the dam last summer. According to Dr. Sileshi, the construction of the dam is 82 percent complete.
When completed, the dam is expected to generate 5,250 megawatts of electricity. The Renaissance Dam is said to be the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa. The construction of the dam is confusing Ethiopia with Sudan and Egypt. Egypt, in particular, expressed concern that the dam would reduce the flow of water into its territory, stressing that the project would not affect other riparian countries.
The three countries have repeatedly negotiated a solution to the dispute, but no agreement has been reached. Eighty-six percent of the Nile’s water comes from Ethiopia, and the fact that Ethiopia has not used as much as it should have so far shows that the Renaissance Dam project has mobilized the community. Statistics show that 60 percent of Ethiopians do not currently have access to electricity. It is hoped that the Renaissance Dam will start generating electricity soon.
