Religious leaders called on followers in their Easter message to strengthen the culture of supporting the needy and preserving the peaceful coexistence and tolerance of the country, while observing the holiday.
Christians in Ethiopia are celebrating Easter (Fasika) across the country following eight weeks of fasting. Patriarch of Ethiopian Orthodox Church His Holiness Abune Mathias I called on followers to extend support to poor, orphans and people affected by the unrest and to exercise kindness and genuine love while observing the festivity.
Abune Mathias also urged the faithful to mark the holyday in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ and show their empathy and compassion for displaced people.
Cardinal of the Ethiopian Catholic Church, Berhaneyesus Demerew stated that the faithful need to observe Easter by supporting the poor and return to the values of forefathers and mothers which encourage coexistence, love, tolerance and reconciliation.
The cardinal also called on adherents to pray for their country and embrace a culture of discussion to solve problems thereby keeping the age-old peace of the country.
President of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, Yonas Yigezu said that there should be justice and fairness to get peace and security in the country. Noting that many Ethiopians are religious people, the president underscored that atrocities that have been committed in various parts of the country is contrary to religious teachings and against the culture of the country.
President of the Evangelical Churches Fellowship of Ethiopia, Pastor Tsadiku Abdo, commended followers to show their love and compassion for others while celebrating the day. He also called on followers to mark Easter in accordance with COVID-19 protocols.
